Precision Strike Move from the U.S. Army: 5 Companies to Compete for PrSM Increment 4

Article Image

KEY INTELLIGENCE TAKEAWAYS & SUMMARY

  • The U.S. Army has signed prototype contracts with Anduril, Castelion, Lockheed Martin, Mach Industries, and RTX under the Increment 4 program.
  • The next-generation Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) will be capable of destroying both land and naval moving targets at ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
  • The development process will continue with competitive flight tests and elimination phases to be conducted in fiscal year 2027.
  • While earlier variants are being tested in the operational field, the new Increment 4 project will radically increase the U.S.'s long-range precision firepower.

The United States Army has stepped up its gear in the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) program, which it conducts to keep pace with the changing dynamics of the modern battlefield and gain strategic depth. According to an official statement made by Redstone Arsenal, the army command signed critical agreements with five leading actors of the defense sector for the development of state-of-the-art long-range missile prototypes. Anduril, Castelion, Lockheed Martin, Mach Industries, and RTX will compete for the PrSM Increment 4 program, which will shape the army's future firepower architecture.

Technical Capacity and Field Balances

Each contractor selected under the program has been tasked with developing advanced munition systems that can be fired from the high-mobility M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) platforms currently in the inventory. The next-generation missiles to be designed according to the technical specifications are required to strike moving targets on both land and sea at distances greater than 621 miles (approximately 1,000 kilometers) with high precision. This capability aims to provide U.S. forces with unprecedented deterrence and operational flexibility, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and European theaters.

The project schedule has been meticulously structured to increase agility in defense procurement processes. According to statements, development activities to be carried out within fiscal year 2027 will culminate in competitive flight tests and a down-select process. Subsequently, additional series production contracts are envisioned to be awarded to the owners of designs that succeed and demonstrate superior performance in the final flight tests to be funded in fiscal year 2028. This move also draws attention as it comes right after Lockheed Martin's massive $1.2 billion Increment 2 contract won for the production of short-range ballistic missiles. Early versions of the PrSM family are already known to have passed operational tests and been tried in conflict environments.

Conclusion and Future Perspective

The mobilization of five different companies for the U.S. Army's PrSM Increment 4 project is a concrete manifestation of its strategy to prevent monopolization in defense procurement and rapidly integrate innovative technologies into the field. These munitions, which go beyond traditional missile systems and can even hit moving naval targets at ranges of one thousand kilometers, have the potential to directly affect military balances in global power competition. The critical flight tests in 2027 and 2028 will not only determine the winning companies but also certify the technological standards of global artillery and missile warfare for the coming decades.
