Critical Move by the Pakistan Navy: First Hangor-Class Submarine Fires Missile in the Northern Arabian Sea

Article Image

KEY INTELLIGENCE TAKEAWAYS & SUMMARY

 • PNS Hangor submarine successfully fired an advanced anti-ship cruise missile during exercises conducted in the North Arabian Sea.
 • The Hangor class, a derivative of the Chinese-built Type 039B Yuan class, is opening a new front in Pakistan's submarine warfare capabilities and in the A2/AD strategy.
 • Within the scope of the project, a total of 8 submarines are being built, 4 of which are being produced in China and 4 simultaneously at the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW).

New Chapter in Strategic Underwater Power

Pakistan Navy has crossed another critical threshold in terms of regional maritime security and strategic deterrence doctrine. The newly added PNS Hangor, the lead submarine of the Hangor-class, expected to form the backbone of the navy's underwater strike capability, successfully completed its first live-fire firing during operational tests conducted in international waters of the North Arabian Sea. The firing activity, personally monitored at sea by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, went down in record as a concrete field validation of the platform's combat management system, sensor integration, and weapons release precision.

Within the scope of the conducted test, PNS Hangor fired an advanced anti-ship cruise missile with long-range precision strike capability. The platform that hit the designated target with a perfect hit received full marks from the naval command echelon and successfully closed a critical period in the project's operational readiness phase. Experts point out that this shot institutionalized the long-range precision strike concept in the Pakistan Navy's maritime authority areas in the Indian Ocean and its surroundings.

Technical Capacity and Area Balance

The Hangor class, which is the product of the massive defense agreement signed between Beijing and Islamabad in 2015, stands out as the export variant of China's leading Type 039B Yuan-class submarine family. According to the architecture of the program, the first four units of this modern fleet of eight ships are built in China, while the remaining four units are produced simultaneously at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW) facilities in Pakistan with the technology transfer model. Although there are some shifts in the schedule due to global supply chain disruptions and shipyard processes, the launch of the first platforms and their successive commissioning adds to the strength of the navy.

Defense analysts estimate that the Hangor-class submarines are approximately 76 meters long and have a displacement of 2,800 tons. Although official authorities refrain from sharing detailed information about the propulsion systems and subsystem architecture due to confidentiality reasons, the platform is known to be equipped with advanced Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This technology exponentially increases the underwater endurance of diesel-electric submarines and, consequently, their stealth coefficient, fundamentally altering the anti-access and area denial (A2/AD) dynamics in the region. Furthermore, assessments that the platforms could be equipped in the future with strategic cruise missiles to complete the nuclear deterrence cycle further increase the geopolitical weight of the submarine.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

This successful live-ammunition test conducted by PNS Hangor clearly demonstrates that the Pakistan Navy is evolving from a traditional naval force into a technologically proficient actor capable of adapting to the modern network-centric warfare domain. This massive procurement initiative, carried out in conjunction with the modernization projects of the Agosta-class submarines, opens the doors to a new era in the protection of the country's maritime borders and power projection in the Indian Ocean. With all Hangor platforms joining the naval inventory in the coming years, it appears inevitable that the submarine force balance in the region will be reshaped.
