Strategic Partnership and the Evolution of the Platform

Italian Fincantieri, a leading actor in the global maritime and defense industry, and PT PAL Indonesia, Indonesia's state-backed leading shipbuilding organization, are ushering in a new dimension in defense cooperation with a critical memorandum of understanding signed in Jakarta. This strategic agreement sets the framework for the comprehensive modernization process of the former Italian aircraft-carrying cruiser ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi—newly named KRI Sriwijaya—which has joined the Indonesian Navy inventory. The text of the agreement was finalized and made official by being signed by Mauro Manzini, Vice President of Sales for Naval Vessels at Fincantieri, and Djenod Kaharuddin, President Director of PT PAL Indonesia.

Built in 1985 for the Italian Navy at the Monfalcone shipyards and having served as a flagship for many years, the historic platform is preparing for a new mission in Indonesian waters during this period when geopolitical dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region are taking shape. This modernization initiative, to be carried out jointly by the two corporate giants, will not only extend the technical life of the platform but also elevate Indonesia's open-sea deterrence capacity to the highest level.

Technical Capacity and Balances in the Field

The modernization program is meticulously structured to maximize the ship's multi-role operational capability. Equipped to conduct missions across a broad spectrum—including traditional naval warfare, surface warfare, maritime security, amphibious operations, humanitarian aid, and crisis management—KRI Sriwijaya will make a major contribution to the operational flexibility of the Indonesian Navy.

The project embodies a perfect synergy in terms of division of labor. Fincantieri, possessing the original design, engineering, and structural database of the ship, will transfer platform know-how throughout the process, while PT PAL Indonesia brings regional maintenance-repair, system integration, and logistic support competencies to the table. This partnership model stands out as a comprehensive industrial cooperation that encourages the integration of defense industry ecosystems and technology transfer between the two countries, extending far beyond the renewal of a single ship. Having previously added Italian-designed PPA (Multi-purpose combat ships) class platforms KRI Brawijaya and KRI Prabu Siliwangi to its inventory, thereby acquiring the most advanced naval platforms in the region, Indonesia is cementing its navy's striking power with this move.
