KEY INTELLIGENCE TAKEAWAYS & SUMMARY
- MKE is establishing turnkey ammunition production facilities in Baku with its first overseas entity, MKE Azerbaijan.
- Within the scope of the project, 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition will be produced with local resources, while raw material supply will be provided by Türkiye.
- With the agreement signed with Azerbaijan's Miras company, expired BMP-1 armored combat vehicles are being modernized with MKE's advanced turret and automation systems.
- In order to ensure cost-effectiveness in modernization projects, local 30 mm cannons have been integrated into MKE turrets, reaching the firing tests and serial production transition phase.
New Page in Strategic Cooperation: MKE Signature in Baku
Machinery and Chemical Industry (MKE), one of the long-standing and strategic actors of the Turkish defense industry, is deepening its international footprint. Statements made during the ADEX fair held in Baku revealed that the military-technological integration between Türkiye and Azerbaijan has evolved into a new dimension. MKE Azerbaijan, which holds the distinction of being MKE's first overseas company, places the defense supply chain between the two countries on a permanent foundation through domestic production and joint projects. This move encompasses turnkey engineering projects that directly contribute to the brotherly country building its own defense ecosystem, beyond just the sale of ready-made ammunition.
Technical Capacity and Field Balances
At the center of the projects carried out in the spirit of a two-state strategic partnership is the ammunition factory established in partnership with Azerbaijan's state company Azersilah. Within this facility, standard infantry rifle ammunition in 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm calibers will be produced by local personnel. While MKE manages the turnkey installation process for the facility, it also provides technical training, granting a sustainable operational capability. While some of the critical raw materials needed during the production process are supplied from Türkiye, the entirely joint character of the project reinforces logistical independence in the region.

Another critical program implemented to ensure flexibility and increased firepower in field operations covers the modernization of armored combat vehicles. Joining forces with Miras, a company under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, MKE is adapting aging BMP-1 platforms in the inventory to modern battlefield requirements. Within the framework of the project division of labor, hull renewal and engine overhaul operations are carried out by Miras; whereas the advanced modern turret systems integrated into the vehicles, featuring day-night thermal cameras, target tracking, and FLIR capabilities, stand out as products of MKE engineering. The integration of 30 mm cannons from the Miras inventory into the new turrets, taking cost-effectiveness into consideration, demonstrates how harmoniously the capabilities of the two countries are blended.
Conclusion and Future Perspective
This comprehensive technology transfer and joint production initiative launched by MKE in Azerbaijan is progressing with a schedule that will rapidly transition to serial production following the completion of firing tests. In addition to the BMP-1 modernization, studies on introducing 76 mm naval guns, chaff systems, 20 mm naval defense turrets, and innovative mine systems such as MALAMAN into the Azerbaijani inventory are also on the table. In line with the effective and decisive vision of the Ministry of Defense Industry of Azerbaijan, MKE's rich production portfolio will exponentially increase the deterrence capacity in the region.
